What is Independent Financial Advice

Independent financial advice is administered by a professional Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) to clients in order to provide the most suitable financial solutions, depending on the needs of the individual.

An IFA is not affiliated or tied to any single provider. They have chosen to offer a service known as “whole of market advice” which means they will search the market for the product or service required, and present a variety of options which they feel offers their client the best value.

The advice given by an IFA is unbiased and unrestricted and will usually relate to investments, pensions, retirement planning, education planning, savings, insurance, tax and legal matters.

IFA Checklist:

  • Considers all retail investment products
  • Uses the word ‘independent’ in describing the advice they offer
  • Has to make it clear what advice they offer

If you are looking to receive advice on investing your money, you must firstly check that the adviser you choose is authorised to offer advice in the jurisdiction in which they operate, and secondly check if they are truly “independent” or restricted in the advice they are able to offer.

This will always be confirmed in writing, but if you are still unsure you should ask for more information.
